Professor Jacques Navez is a Belgian honorary professor with a doctorate in mathematics from the University of Liège.

On Thursday 14 February 2019, Professor
Jacques Navez[*] gave
a lecture entitled “Mathematics for EVERYONE[†] ».
The lecture was held in the room used by
preparatory-year students. Guests included
representatives of the provincial primary and
secondary education inspectorate, school heads and
mathematics teachers. The University was represented by
its management committee, scientific and administrative staff,
alongside many first-year bachelor’s and
preparatory-year students.

In a simple but engaging style,
Professor Navez discussed the challenges of teaching mathematics
and its role in different aspects of everyday life.
Mathematics is relevant both to managing a family budget
and understanding electoral processes, to name two areas
of major importance for individuals and the nation.

At the end of his talk, the speaker
answered participants’ questions, sparking a productive discussion
that had to be cut short because of time constraints.
