Since the start of the century, global economic and population growth and industrial expansion in emerging countries have increased demand for minerals and metals. This has benefited producing economies and encouraged mining development, particularly in developing countries. Higher output nevertheless brings major environmental management challenges for mining companies and governance challenges for producing and processing states.
The last century clearly demonstrated the consequences of poor environmental management. This presentation addresses mining’s environmental issues, existing and emerging solutions, and new technologies for sound environmental management. It also outlines ways to improve governance in producing countries.
