Electricity management in the DRC falls short of technologically advanced countries and even neighbouring countries in comparable circumstances. There is no nationwide grid, and management of vast energy resources is chaotic. Installed capacity cannot meet household, service and industrial demand, while much generating equipment is old or poorly maintained. Closing the gap through the current approach would require decades of sustained, enormous investment. A shift from centralised to distributed management is therefore needed, respecting regulation and increasingly demanding customers’ expectations on consumption and power quality. The priority is to reconcile supply and demand starting at consumption points.
