{"id":782,"date":"2020-03-01T08:23:21","date_gmt":"2020-03-01T08:23:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/universitemapon.ac.cd\/?p=782"},"modified":"2026-10-24T17:22:03","modified_gmt":"2026-10-24T17:22:03","slug":"conference-scientifique-par-le-professeur-jacques-navez","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/universitemapon.ac.cd\/en\/conference-scientifique-par-le-professeur-jacques-navez\/","title":{"rendered":"Scientific lecture by Professor Jacques Navez"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>The<br \/>\nOn 28 February 2020, in room A2 at Mapon University, from 2 pm to<br \/>\n4 pm, a lecture was held on \u201cMathematical instruments used by<br \/>\nSpanish and Portuguese Renaissance navigators\u201d.<br \/>\nThe speaker was Professor Jacques Navez, who holds a doctorate in<br \/>\ndifferential geometry. A Belgian national, Professor Navez has<br \/>\nextensive teaching experience, much of it in Africa,<br \/>\nparticularly in the DRC, Burundi and Sudan.<\/p>\n<p>Before<br \/>\nan audience of University management committee members and students,<br \/>\nalongside guests from different parts of<br \/>\nKindu, the speaker first introduced around ten<br \/>\nSpanish and Portuguese explorers who marked the Renaissance, the early modern period<br \/>\nassociated with major worldwide advances in literature,<br \/>\nphilosophy and science. The explorers presented included<br \/>\nfamiliar figures such as Diogo C\u00e3o and Christopher Columbus, whom<br \/>\nwe have all studied since primary school. <\/p>\n<p>Then,<br \/>\nthe speaker briefly described, one by one, the instruments these<br \/>\nnavigators used to determine their position, known as taking a fix in<br \/>\nmaritime terminology. From the astrolabe to the compass,<br \/>\nthe predecessor of the modern compass, they all worked on<br \/>\nmathematical principles.
